October 3: Cool autumn lures me out by Mie
Totally different from yesterday, we have a refreshing autumnal day today. I welcomed a friend from Tokyo and make a short trip to Beppu and Yufuin. She has only five hours until the return flight departure.

We first visited Beppu to see a "Sand bathing" on the shore. Unfortunately, the unusual hot spring was destroyed by a high wave of typhoon No.18 that hit this area late last month. We then visited to "Sea Hell" of Beppu. Beautiful lotus flowers welcomed us.
An eruption of Mt. Tsurumi 1,200 years ago made a pond filled with blue boiling water called "Sea Hell." The color of the pond is blue as the name shows. A basket is dipped into the pond to make "Hot spring boiled eggs."
Next to the bluish "Sea Hell" is another pond filled with boiling red muddy water. My friend said "The Blue Sea Hell was like a paradise, but this red pond is just like a real Hell." It is really misterious to see two different colores in adjoining boiling ponds.

There are huge Amazonas Lotus in a pond in the greenhouse heated with hot spring water. The diameter of the leaves is 170 centimeters in maximum. The large leaf will hold a small kid on it, the billboad explains. Large busd are swelling large enough to bloom huge flowers of 30-40 centimeter dia that will relese strong fragrance. Beside the buds are baby leaves, they will soon roll out their curled edges. Thr origin of the lotus is Guiana of Amazon.
Many beautiful flowers of cattleya and orchid like this are everywhere around the pool in the greenhouse.
We left Beppu City and came up to a mountain pass, the entrance of Mt. Yufu. We took a short walk around the pass. Many cars are in the parking lot, sugggesting the mountain is crowded with many baclpackers. Japanese pampas grass looks like not so beautiful as usual, propably because damaged by typhoon No.18.

This is a clear view of Yufuin valley from Sagiridai observation platform. Mt. Yufu smiles at us as well.
So many tourists filled the valley. Some leaves have already turned their color to yellow and orange.
We took a lunch at Budouya Restaurant of Tamanoyu hotel. We enjoyed Bungo beef dishes on the reserved table. It was so tender and juicy. She said, "I was very glad to visit Oita. I will visit here again with much more time." Refreshing autumn has arrived here in Oita at last. Autumnal color will soon become to its peak. I also felt I would visit here again.
