2001 USA-Germany Travel Record

September 28, 2001: Long Grove

Today, Mayumi attends to a meeting of kids of Japanese community. She stacked many used items such as toys and furniture in the car for a garage sale.

Now, we borrowed Don's Cadillac and drove out. Just after passing by the residential area, the landscape soon turned to wilderness stretching beyond the horizon.

This is Long Grove. We used to visit here many times two decades ago. Mayumi says this is a kind of resort like Karuizawa in Japan.

I have been anxious if the place has been totally changed, but dear old corners were still there as they were.

The apple factory was turned to a souvenir store selling apple pie and jams. I enjoyed warm apple tea and bought apple jam bins.

Many shopping stores sell lovely goods like those. Halloween is closing.

The cover of Long Grove guidebook is a covered bridge. I hadn't visited there when I lived in Chicago here. I was glad to find the bridge was still there. The bridge allows one-sided traffic. Oncoming cars wait each other.

Next, we consulted with a map and visited Woodsfield shopping mall. I have visited here together with my friends. At that time, a son of the family boasted that the mall is the biggest in America. It is still called one of the three biggest malls. We took large hamburger as a late lunch here.

The mall is too large to look through. We bought a map here. There are many small flags all around the world, but the cylinder in the bottom is vacant. Yes, all the Stars and Stripes were sold out.

There are many wonderful stores in the mall.

It is already evening. Chilly fall wind started to blow. We went back home crossing a railroad of Metro. We arrived home safely. We enjoyed a late afternoon tea with apple pie we brought back home.
