2001 USA-Germany Travel Record

October 12, 2001: Hamburg (2)

We can see many spires of church here and there beyond tall buildings. We looked around those churches. On the main street, we found a smutty building. What is it?

It was St. Nikolai Church destroyed by WW2.

The church is under restoration. Some remnants are collected from the ruin.

On the wall is a board that reads "Nie wieder (Never again)." I thought it is just like A-Bomb Dome in Hiroshima Japan.

Through the sooted, painful scar of ruin of St.Nikolai Church, I could see another spire of a church. I could hear occasional ringing of the church bells. I strongly hope the bell is the symbol of peace.

We walked much today and was very tired. We took a rest in a floating terrace of the canal. First, we took coffee and then ordered a similar dessert, which was taken by a next seat guest. They refreshed us completely.

Don't forget to drink beer whenever you have time here in Germany. Time flows slowly in the warm afternoon.

I could realize the beauty of City on the water by looking swans and ducks on the lake Alster.

I hear something noisy on the square of the City Hall. What is it? I found a national flag of Mexico on the central balcony of the building.

Police cars and motorcycles are standing by. Many spectators watch somebody will be coming out soon. The police color in Germany is white and green. The policemen are very friendly, they are talking with the people around frankly and some of them are even willing to be taken by commemorative pictures.

With a whoop with joy, the couple of president of Mexico appeared from the building. The thunderous applause arose from the spectator with the shouts of "Mexico, Mexico." Guarded by the police, they soon left the place. People were again looking and walking around as if there were nothing special.

After that, we look through malls and department stores in the downtown. We took dinner at the same restaurant in which we took lunch and got back the hotel by tram. We were happy because we could have a pleasant day without any trouble today.
