June 10: Gave a lecture at Oita University
Today, I came to a junior high school attached to Oita University in order to give a lecture in an open course of fiscal year 2000. I found a formal name of the school, it was so long. Usually, we call just "Attached Junior High School."
Here is a guide paper at the entrance, reading "Try to create your homepage." The course is a four-serial.
I changed my shoes to a pair of slippers at the entrance and went up to the second floor. The school is off today, on a second Saturday. The corridor of the off-class junior high school smells something like very dear old sentiments. In the boxes along the window are many tagged samples of stones and rocks from various parts of Kyushu Island. They remind me of my dear old junior high school in my birthplace.
The Junior High School has a difference from my memory, however. There was a fine computer room at the end of the corridor. Everybody has to wear exclusive slippers here to enter the room.
There are as many as 50 personal computers in order in the room. Professor Oiwa (left) and professor Yamashita (right) of Oita University set up a PC and a projector to be used in my lecture.
My homepage was projected on a large screen. I feel delighted and something embarrassed. My pages will be displayed on this screen in synchronizing with my lecture.
All the members of the class have seated. Professor Oiwa made a few word and my lecture started at 2:00 p.m.
The open course is run jointly by Oita University and its Attached Junior High School beginning with the theme of "What world will open before you by publishing your homepage", followed by courses of actual homepage making.
I talked about how I enjoy my Internet life with the title of "How my homepage spreads my vision worldwide." I introduced my experiences of the travel to the USA and Australia visiting my Internet friends, and how I enjoy many things and events together with my local PC friends here in Oita. My hour lecture was followed some questions and answers. One of male class member said "As I have heard unpleasant stories about Internet, I have long been worrying about to join the Internet. Today, by hearing your lecture, I was encouraged to create my homepage and make new warm human circle through it as you have just talked." I was very delighted to hear of his remark.
In the end, teacher Yoshiyama of the Junior High School encouraged the class member to become familiar with the PCs by switching on and off practice. The class member ranges from a fifth grade of elementary school to a 71-year old senior citizen with four males and ten females. I hope my small lecture today will trigger off their homepage making and help them find new world.
