Daily Shopping

Mieko Nagano: Oita city, Japan

To an ordinary homemaker, preparation of daily meals is one of the major works. It is not only an important measure to maintain healthy body but also a big pleasure for me. It is one of the challenging activities as well to choose fresh materials for preparation of everyday meal with various ideas. Here in Oita, we are blessed with the mild weather and plentiful supply of food from seas, fields, and hillsides. I make it a rule to get rice, the staple food of Japanese, in the form of unpolished grain from one of my friends who runs farming. I usually bring a required amount of rice to a nearby coin-run station for polishing up to 80%. Then I cook it using an electric rice-cooker.

I buy vegetables at so-called "self-service 100 yen green stands" on which nearby farmers bring fresh greens up every morning. I put some 100 coins into a bottle of the stand to get fresh vegetables just arrived from the field under the shining sun. They are very sweet and delicious, absorbing full of sunshine blessing.

We have supermarkets in a short drive from home. There are usually two fish shops in a supermarket. I purchase fresh catch of the day such as horse mackerel and sardine from the sea of Oita. Although I have a plan to buy meat today, high-spirited shouts of the fish sellers often change my mind to make stretch my hand to get fish inspite of myself.

We love meat very much as well. I get meat in a joint buying once a month. Chicken, pork, and beef are supplied from local agricultural cooperatives in Yabakei town in which they produce meat using carefully selected feeds. Sometimes we sit around the table together with our close friend to enjoy a pleasant dinner with wine and steak
