august 23: Oita Soccer Game Stadium under construction by Mie
In an off-line meeting of COARA, some members spoke out they wanted to enjoy "really tasty Kimuchi." The dream has been becoming true, 11 COARA members are going to visit Seoul, Korea. The plan has swollen, they will visit Korean soccer stadium in relation with 2002's Korea-Japan cosponsored World Soccer Game. Also they want to meet and exchange with the networkers in Korea. The trip, just two-night-three-days, will become very busy.
Today, we visited construction site of Oita Soccer Stadium, prior to visiting to Korean stadium. First we gathered to COARA office downtown Oita. Some members are busy in making arrangement of the trip. Mr. Mori (right) and Mr. Nakamuras. Two children will also join the trip.

Unfortunately, the weather was rainy today. Passing through Oita railroad station, we climbed up to Mera bypass to near Oita Information High School. A forest of cranes has come in our sights. The wildness was cut clear to make access roads to the site.

We arrived a large construction site office, "Oita prefectural Sport Park construction office." There are some samples of lawn to be adopted to the stadium. Among them are "Saint Augustine, Tifton, Elroto, and Korean lawn." After an intensive research, Elroto species, rightmost of the picture, was finally selected, because it is strong enough for shadows in the stadium, easy to grow laterally, and has strong resistance against being stepped on.

Mr. Ikebe, general manager of the site, kindly explained the project: the basic design of access roads and environmental protection policy such as preservation of Oita salamander and wildness surrounding the park.
The progress of the construction is about 35%, he explained. The construction cost of the stadium alone is 25.1 billion-yen and total budget to complete two soccer fields and relate facilities will be 58 billion-yen. A big project, anyway. After learning about the mechanism of movable roof, we all headed to the site. We all wear a helmet.
We passed by a billboard that reads "Safety First."

In the stadium are so many cranes like this. An oval spectators stand has already taking shape. Around the seat, big pillars to support the movable roof are constructed.

A huge arched pillar like this will support the movable room. Mr. Yuuki, on the right, is admired the size of the pillar.

Wires will operate the movable roof. The pipe covered with blue vinyl is a conduit for the wire. It takes 20 minutes to close the roof at the cost of 20,000 each time. When opening the roof, the roof will move according to the gravity. On the right is the roof, visible in white above the blue sheet.
Now, we came up to the entrance of the stadium. Ticket sale office will be around here. The wide-stretched huge roof will cover the area, making guests free from the rain.
Mr. Mori, who is running "oita2002 mailing list", is very eager in listening the explanation and taking pictures by his digital camera.

Wheal chair seats of 210 will be provided on the ground floor. Below the floor, spectators' seats will be constructed down to the underground second floor - field floor. The general-view picture was taken from the main gate entrance. On the field are many building blocks to make spectators' seats. On the right is first ground floor, first and second floor. The corner lines are visible from any seats. The green square structure in the front is the pillars to support the roof under construction. On the back of them is a seat on which the edge of the roof is rest. In the front, the third floor will be constructed. Removable 9,000 seats will also equipped on the field floor. The full capacity will be 43,000 seats.
The concrete step seats will be equipped with seats like this. The seat is foldable, which is convenient for passing between the seats. It has an armrest on both sides that offer a good fitting to the audience. The size of the chair, however, may be too small for a fat person. Mr. Kuboki tries to sit on the chair.

The dense forest which was located to the west of Akeno apartment complex - we used to be the residents of the complex-, has now turned to a big construction site like this. Some of access roads were already completed and many houses fill the space. I was surprised by the big change. On the way back home, we swung in a restaurant to take lunch and discuss the schedule in Seoul. From left, the Nakamuras, Mrs. Fujii, Mr. Kuboki, Mr. Suyama, and Mr. Mori, Mr.Yuuki, Mie (not shown.)
