May 28: "2002 Fukuoka-Oita Sight-seeing Corridor Plan"
by Mie
The World Soccer will be held in 2002 here in Oita. Local business groups and related administrations are preparing for the big event ever experienced in Kyushu island. Many people joined at Peacock Hall on the fifth floor of Oita Daiichi hotel today from Fukuoka, Hita, Yufuin, Beppu and Oita to meet and discuss the blue print of the "Fukuoka-Oita Sightseeing Corridor Plan." The sponsor of the meeting is Oita Committee for Economic Development, and the co-sponsor is Hyper Network Society Research- an incorporated foundation based in Oita. Speakers sit around the table arranged in square with four monitors in the center. On the wall is a big screen to display the related Internet web pages.

Three people take the chair: from left, Mr. Koichiro Tsuruta, Ms. Izumi Kuwano, and Mr. Tooru Ono.

The meeting opened at 1:00 p.m. Mr. Katsu Kumanomido, Dupty general manager of Oita prefectural government Business and Sightseeing Development Department makes the opening speech. In the center sits wearing a green suit Ms. Yasuko Goto, Manager of Planning and Research section of Sightseeing Department of the Transportation Ministry. She gave a comment, "The World Soccer will bring considerable economical ripple effects on this area. Oita can sale its name to all around the world. Careful planning based upon an intensive pre-research on the merits as well as the demerits should be made. What is important is what you can leave to the local community after the big game. Oita and Fukuoka must cooperate and send information out to the world so that visitors can enjoy the big events and trip to the area."

Many participants including people in charge of sightseeing in the local governments of Fukuoka and Oita, hotel managers, transportation companies, and local business groups were hearing the discussion very eagerly (left picture.) Mr. Shinichi Kume of Furukawa Electric (left in the right picture) is a close friend of Mr. Okada - former coach of the representative of Japan Soccer team. He made a hot speech, "The World Soccer will make a sanctuary on a land in which the game was held. We must think how to keep the sustainable concern of the enthusiastic soccer fan after the event." On the right is Mr. Kai and Mr. Matsumura, both of them are the members of COARA.
Mr. Nick Sars (in white suit) of Fukuoka Now Media Production appealed "Many visitors will come here from all around the world. I think foreign residents in the area have to take part in the planning and sending information out to the world from the early stage of the preparation."
Some of the participants appeals from the stand point of view of the hotel business: Mr. Kentaro Nakaya, Chairman of Yufuin Sightseeing Association (right), appeals "We have to make out a 'control system' to make a smooth flow of visitors. This includes accommodations, transportation, and integrated information on the logistics of man, material, and energy." In the center is Ms. Yukiko Miyazaki, a challenging landlady of Hita Sightseeing Association, comments "Look at the map on the screen. You will find that Hita city is in the exact center of the corridor. Hita is very easy to access from the two cities. We are planning to join the power of five spas in Chikugo valley." Mr. Tetsu Saito, World Soccer preparation office of the prefectural government, stresses "I have learned many things from France tournament held in Nanto last year: first, the local people were encouraged to send information out to the world, secondly, local communities in the vicinity of the site were united mentally, and thirdly, they could enjoy economical ripple effects. I hope we can put NGO power together to produce the similar effects."
The year of 2002 will come soon. How to summarize and materialize today's proposals is the key to the successful opening of the tournament and its ripple effects. Thank you for your nice discussion from Yufuin: from left Ms. Izumi Kuwano - managing director of Tamanoyu hotel, Mr. Kentaro Nakaya - president of Kamenoi Besso Hotel, Mr. Kunpei Mizoguchi - president of Tamanoyu hotel.
Also thank you all the people of COARA office working behind the scenes: from left; Miss Kusamoto, Ms. Abe (Hyper), Miss Umeno, Miss Tomonari, and Miss Mukai holding a brochure of Fukuoka Asia Month '98 Report.
