April 3: Begonia in Kujyu Flowers Valley
by Mie
Begonia originates from highlands of 2,000 meters in Andes, South America. One of my close friends Mr. and Mrs. Yamada took us to an unusual "Begonia Park", the first park of the kind in Kyushu.
Begonia is difficult to grow by controlling temperature and lighting. In this park, horticultural experts succeeded in blooming such beautiful flowers after intensive trial and error.

The flower greatly varies in shape: rose-like, camellia-like, carnation-like, and double-petal type.
Horticultural technology produced such abeautiful year-round begonias from wild species, but they are generally vulnerable to heat or chillness, requiring careful control of temperature and brightness. Hanging-type and stand-type begonia are quite unusual, the latter holds large sized flowers up to 20 centimeters across.

On the left is a rose-like begonia with an unusual beautiful color. On the left is a begonia, just looks like a carnation.
The entrance fee is 300 yen, but Mr. Yamaha bought a year-round ticket. He often comes here whenever the guests visit him. He is always busy in taking pictures, because he finds new type of the flowers every time he comes here.
in an adjascent vinyle house are so many begonias like this for sale. They are easy to cultivate in ordinary homes. I bought a pod of pink-colored begonia in commemoration of visiting here.
It was hard to leave the beautiful garden. From left; Mrs. Yamada, Mie, and Mr. Yamaha. My husband ken took the picture.
