March 31: Spring has come! Walking along Oita White road
by Mie

The weather in Oita has been rather worse since I conceived the arrival of spring. We have had continuous rain or cold days as if it turned back to winter. Today, however, we have a beautiful weather from the morning. It is hard to stay in home on a day like this. I went out for a walk. Mt. Ryouzen lies quietly under a spring haze. The bank of Nanase river is already covered with fresh green grass.

Today, I walked whole "white Road" that runs western suburbs of Oita City. The road starts from Kinoue crossing of old route 210 that ends at Miyazaki intersection of route 10. The road was constructed as a by-path of old narrow route 210. The route runs along Nanase river whose river bed is covered with yellow rape flowers.

Look this deep blue sky. I haven't seen such beautiful sky for a long time. The White Road is lined with lily magnolias. The petals of the flower are already beginning to wilt, but it was so beautiful when I looked at it in full-bloom.

The road is also lined with shrubbery of Hirado azaleas that will hold, of course, white flower like this (right.) Another species of the roadside tree is camellia, the symbol flower of Oita City, that will also bloom white flowers. Just like the name suggests, the road is decorated with white flowers in every season of the year.
In a field along the road were strawberries which hold white flowers as well. is there any red fruits? They look like to have been picked up in the early morning, I have come here too late.
On the edge of the sidewalk are some white flowers of dandelion, the are just about to be tread on.
I found a small corner on the sidewalk of the heavy traffic road. A stone image of Jizo, a guardian deity of children, sit still in a beautiful stone shelter with a red bib around its neck.

Two other "white" flowers along the White Road: white peach flower (left) and white Thunberg spiera. They are shining white under the clear blue sky. I can not believe the bad weather until yesterday.
Usually, I drive through quickly the White Road without seeing anything particular. Today, I have found many new things. This is a large stone construction-completion monument near the wall of a gas-filling station, that reads "White Road."

I walked through the White Road for six kilometers from home, taking one and a half hour up to the junction of route 10. On my way back, I traced Oita river bank. Many rape flowers are on the river bed (left) and Mt. Takasaki in the distance. I feel some ache on my legs, but let's go home on foot.
Finally, I got back home. Today, I could enjoy a full spring. I am tired a little, but this is a sort of "comfortable fatigue." The cherry trees in the next-door kindergarten hold some flowers today. They will burst into blooming to tomorrow in the warm sunlight.
