March 8: Hot spring tour (Beppu)
by Mie
Miss Yang found a "gray phone" in Fujimigaoka community and called her mother by a calling card. She has been staying in my house for four days and has been looking somewhat lonely to hear her mother's voice. She came out of the phone box with a refreshed face.
It is a little bit colder today but the sky is clear. We drove up to Beppu Beach to view the sea. She found an unusual site: "sand bath."

She challenged taking a bath. After changing her coat into a Yukata robe, she lay on the warm sand. Helpers then put warm sand over her body using rakes. She said it was somewhat heavy, but looked relaxed wrapped with cozy warmth.
After ten minutes, she got up from the sand and washed herself in a hot spring nearby. She looks shinning in front of a signboard written in three languages including Korean.
Next visit was Myouban spa to see the steam coming up directly from the ground. We could view a beautiful arch over the valley, a distant view of Beppu city, and Mt. Takasaki.

Yang was surprised to see the steam and the boiling ponds in the spa. We enjoyed special "spa-eggs" boiled with the super heated steam of the spa.
