May 2005 This month flower : Jasmine

Mieko Nagano, Oita City, Japan

Early May here in Oita is already summer-like season. Strong sunlight
make jasmine flower to release its sweet fragrance into the air on my
garden. I bought a small pod of jasmine about four years ago. As it
filled the room with stronger sweet fragrance than expected, I put it
out of the room and then finally planted on the ground west of my garden
terrace. I made a small support frame using bamboo twigs. Jasmine
started to grow strongly after it was planted in the spacious ground and
stretched its vine freely. It held many flower buds on the bamboo frame.

In the next year, it grew much, stretching the vines longer and
increasing bud number as ever. Good fragrance drifted around my garden
every year since then. When winter comes, I always wonder if the flower
was died, but it starts to shoot fresh leaves and grow buds without fail
in spring time.

I am happy to see the plant having much more flowers than usual. I cut a
piece of twig and put it into the flower stand. I think the smell of the
flower matches well with the room.
